At first, I was hesitant to book a session ó†$100 seemed like so much money for just 15 minutes of face time. But several of my author friends on Instagram had a great experience, so I took the plunge. I’m so glad I did! It wasn’t just the 15 minutes of face time, but the opportunity to have an agent actually review my submission thoroughly in advance so we could have a conversation about it. Dani Segelbaum was so friendly, helpful and encouraging. Her enthusiasm for my query letter and initial pages gave me the confidence I needed to head back into the querying trenches feeling good about my work, and her suggestions for tweaks to make my submission the best it could be were so helpful. Talking with Kaitlyn Sanchez was so delightful I forget that the next day, I would have to drop being a summer writer and go back to being a high school English teacher. Kaitlyn was charming, warm, and encouraging. She had wonderful suggestions that helped me make my query stronger. Although Dani SegelbaumÃs vivisection of my query was in-depth, she was so congenial that there was no need for Novocain. She gave me pinpoint suggestions that helped me streamline the pitch and make the prose clearer. An extra set of eyes is invaluable to any writeróespecially when the task is the dreaded query letteróand DaniÃs perspective allowed me to see the letter as the opening of a dialogue. Kayla was incredible. She started off by asking what my goals were for the session, tailoring the experience based on what I wanted to achieve. My primary goal was to determine if my writing sample lined up with the expectations created by my query. She explained how the description of my character in the query prepared the reader for the sample. She did this by pointing out specific sentences in the query and sample. Her analysis was spot on. And she was just a cool person who, by the end of the 15 minutes, made me feel excited to get back to querying because of her enthusiasm and care. She also eased some anxiety about timelines: 6 weeks into querying is still in the “infant stages.” This was a helpful orientation of how time moves in this process. I would highly recommend Kayla.
