Ageless Literary Wisdom

Since I decided in 2019 that I wanted to become a traditionally published fiction author, Caitlin McDonald has always been at the top of my WISHLIST of Agents that I want to partner with.

Caitlin’s and my 15 minute Query & 10 page story review was nothing short of Spectacular!!! Every single one of the the peer, client, and literary reviews about Caitlin McDonald are right on. Experience, Insight, Knowledge, and knowing what it takes to take yourself to the next level and beyond, as a writer is Caitlin’s wheelhouse.

Would I pay to have more 1:1’s with Caitlin? HELL YES I WOULD!!! Caitlin, your are a Literary Angel Agent… I would be honored to have you review my work.

Took my publishing package from C to A in minutes

Seeking an industry insider perspective from someone who cares deeply about you finding an agent? Choose Rebecca Raskin. Rebecca provided incredibly useful answers on genre/shelving, positioning and comps, query letter and manuscript. Specifically, she helped me realize that I’d made some rookie mistakes. First, my query letter didn’t have a strong enough hook and description like you would say to someone at a cocktail party. Second, it needed the full character plot and comps from debut authors in women’s fiction with a central romance theme. Third, my first 10 pages needed to ensure readers care about both my characters equally. Thanks to Rebecca’s actionable feedback, I was able to make material improvements in both my query letter and manuscript. Literally, her consultation took my publishing package from C to A. Highly recommend especially to debut authors who are new to traditional publishing.

Helpful written review issued ahead of time

I didn’t have to wait for the last minute to get Melissa’s review, which was a bonus (I did sign up early, so might not work the same for authors who drag their heels). It was a written review which included overall comments on what was good, what she didn’t think was working, and what might make it less saleable. Then there were some comments on specific points within my first ten pages. Very worth my investment.

super helpful query critique

I really appreciated the live query discussion with Katharine. She understood what I was trying to do and my questions, and her feedback was focused and thought-provoking. Definitely worthwhile (and enjoyable)!

Just What I Needed!

Molly was fabulous! I submitted my first ten pages of my YA romantic suspense to be critiqued. I also submitted my query as requested. Molly had encouraging things to say about my pages, concluding that they’re pretty much ready for querying. She gave me advice on how to improve the query letter, which I’ve done, and already sent off a few queries.

Safe Space with Eric – AND he provides a wealth of useful info!

Hello!

I benefited greatly from my time with Eric for a few reason. He sent me his notes on my pages one week before our meeting. So when our appointment rolled around I could ask all the questions that fit into our time slot. This was invaluable to me as a new fiction and picture book writer. Additionally, Eric provided extra online resources that are so helpful, especially in terms of formatting a picture book.

When I requested Eric, I didn’t realize he doesn’t usually deal with children’s picture books. Yet he was so kind and gracious and treated my manuscript with respect and so much kindness. I enjoyed our talk, and am currently working on changes we spoke about.

Thank you, Eric!

Brilliant, strategic advice

Ivan was amazing! He made two invaluable suggestions, one strategic and structural, one more relating to the prose, and both have transformed the manuscript, especially those crucial opening chapters. As a result, we understand the characters much more fully, the themes run deeper, and the reader has time to care about each protagonist before the next is introduced. Something obvious I’d missed. I’m extremely grateful to him. I’ve worked a several editors before. No one else has been so insightful or helpful.

Hard and helpful

Anjanette wasn’t hard. She was very nice. But she asked hard questions. Perceptive ones that felt harder and harder the longer I thought about them. I am impressed.

Best investment ever

Alice was amazing! She was very encouraging and gave me positive feedback. My grief memoir is a heavily emotional manuscript right from first pages; Alice was clearly drawn in. We discussed the sticky topic of hybrid genres which was very helpful as I move forward. I know my query letter is more polished now and I look forward to submissions. A huge thank you to Alice. I won’t forget you.

Powerful insight into how an agent reads queries!

Katharine reviewed my query letter with a fine-toothed comb, letting me know how each sentence impacted her as an agent. She offered invaluable insight into what each sentence signals to an agent, and how to use each sentence to maximize the likelihood of drawing in the right agent. Thank you Katharine!
